Pressure Drop Across Multiple Units
When pressure drops at a single fixture, the problem is typically inside that unit. When pressure drops simultaneously across multiple units or floors, the problem is upstream at the service line or meter. Galvanized Steel in Pre-1980 Multi-Unit Buildings
Multi-unit residential buildings and commercial properties built before 1980 frequently have galvanized steel service lines and interior distribution piping. Galvanized steel corrodes from the inside out. Internal corrosion products accumulate on pipe walls, progressively reducing effective inside diameter and eventually producing pinhole leaks throughout the corroded section. Galvanized service lines in Aurora’s 1970s apartment stock are at the age where internal restriction is severe and leaks are appearing on a predictable schedule.
